All Time Top Communication Apps

Communication Apps
From unlimited text messaging to video calls that aren’t charged by the minute, these apps are integral to the plan of achieving communication

WhatsApp

WhatsApp took the good things (like always-on, group chats etc.) from BBM (BlackBerry Messenger), and made them available for every platform (including BlackBerry). It automatically adds contacts that use WhatsApp to your favorites — if they’re in your phonebook and using WhatsApp, you can start messaging them right away. WhatsApp has the widest audience any mobile instant messenger has seen. It’s a name that’s become synonymous with instant messaging. Along with text, you can share videos, photos, audio clips, locations and contacts with other WhatsAppers.

Hike

Hike is much like WhatsApp in functionality, but here are a couple of reasons why we think it deserves to be on this list. Firstly, it’s an elegantly designed cross-platform app. It has a cool feature called “Nudge” that gets the attention of the receiver by simply tapping on the screen. Next, you get to send 100 free text messages per month. At the moment, they’re also giving away `10 talk-time for signing up and `20 talk-time for every person you’ve successfully invited to use Hike. You can message friends who’re on Hike and also those who aren’t. Lastly, you’ll be proud to know that this app was developed in our country.

Skype

Irrespective of which device you and the receiver are on, you can still have a video conversation using Skype. It not only works on major smartphone platforms, but has apps for Windows and Mac too. The app has another reason for settling into your app drawer — if you have relatives living abroad (who doesn’t?!), you can buy Skype credit and call them on their telephones via the internet for a fraction of the cost of an ISD call. For example, calling to the US on Skype today roughly costs one-sixth the cost it would via a mobile phone (~`1 per minute).

Avocado
Source: Avocado

Avocado is the fun, private, and secure app for couples to stay connected. Send messages, share calendars and lists, doodle on photos, and more!
A recent Play Store featured app, Avocado keeps your favorite person as close as your phone.
Avocado is a two-person app that allows you and your better half to have a dedicated space to communicate. More than just being a private little instant messenger, Avocado also allows the creation of lists and calendar entries. You can share images in a common album, click photos of yourself on your phone and assign them as emoticons. If that wasn’t enough, you can “hug” the phone to send a virtual hug to your beau, or even apply a virtual kiss to his or her photo. Last, but not least, you can also access all the content on Avocado via any web browser.

Viber
Source: Viber

Viber works in the same way as WhatsApp but has one additional important feature — free voice calling. So instead of paying for talktime by the minute, you can make calls over the internet to other Viber users and talk for as long as you’d like (especially when you’re on Wi-Fi). Viber’s second trump card— other than supporting all the popular smartphone OSes — is its supports of the not-so-popular ones such as Samsung Bada as well. And since its functionality is similar to WhatsApp, phonebook contacts are automatically added to favorites if they’re using the app.
