FXGuru is an app that lets you create your own hi tech movies; no video editing skills necessary.
They have a bunch of effects lasting about 10 seconds that add the “sci-fi” to any movie clip, with sounds that add to the drama. The app comes with 3 effects built-in — a satellite crashing to the ground, a
UFO flying in space and an explosive barrel that will “destroy” everything in the video. You’ve got virtual decals as markers to help align the effects in place, so that your shots look realistic. For iOS, check out Action Movie FX freely available for iPhone and iPad.

It has a strong user-generated ratings system that helps you judge what to watch before you watch it. You can also create your ‘watchlist’ to keep a track of the shows and movies that you want to see.

Googling the lyrics to a song every single time
is an unwanted and time wasting. TuneWiki is a multi-platform app that gladly does all the dirty work for you. The moment you play a song on your device, it uses the internet to pull out lyrics of that particular song instantly. For many of the songs, it also automatically highlights the line being sung so you don’t have to scroll to find it. Other nifty features include on-the-fly translation of songs in 40 different languages. There’s a song identification tool as well — powered by Gracenote. Unlike competing apps such as Shazam or SoundHound, this service can be used unlimited number of times. We tried many English and Hindi songs and it got them all spot on!

BookMyShow is the go-to app for booking tickets to movies, plays, gigs and other events in India. It shows you movie listings in theatres around you (thanks to that GPS chip in your phone), and even sorts them in the order of the ones you’re closest to. Once decided, you can choose your seating right on your handheld and proceed to the multiple payment options available. After purchase, it also creates a neat little e ticket with all the necessary details for your disposal once you're at the movie hall.

Saavn is an India-based streaming music app. At the moment, it hosts over two million tracks for free listening to its users. The interface is relatively simple, but the design of the buttons could do with some fine-tuning. But it does the job — start searching for songs and it will throw up results; click to start playback. You can create your playlist or choose from its weekly new charts. If you can’t find a song on Saavn, consider ‘Gaana’, a similar app that’s available for BlackBerry users too. It’s also got a better-looking interface. Both have social elements where you can see what your friends are playing and share your playlists.

Tab Pro is a guitar tablature app for smartphones. This app is super helpful if you want to learn to play a song on the guitar. It gives you access to over 80,000 songs. A virtual fret-board tells you which fingers to hold where on the guitar. You can slow down the tempo if it’s too fast for you, or even keep looping a portion of a song till you get it right. You can also choose different instruments within a song (rhythm, solo or acoustic guitar). Once you’re confident that you’ve nailed it, the app allows muting of any instrument so that you can jam along with the rest of the virtual instruments.
